Types of Moving Estimates
When looking for Moving companies and getting Moving estimates for different companies, it is important to understand the different types of estimates you may receive from companies around the bay area. The more informed you are the easier it is to decide and choose the right match. You may also want to check for any deposit requirements and be wary of companies that seem too lax or unclear about requirements. These companies may not be very professional or carry the proper insurance to cover all of your belongings.
The three types of Moving estimates are:
Nonbinding
This estimate is pretty self explanatory. The moving company will give you a quote based on the amount of items you have (usually based on weight). If you have fewer items than estimated, your final cost will be reduced. But, if you have more items than estimated, your final cost will be increased. The effectiveness of this type estimate is determined by how accurately you account for your items. Sometimes it may be difficult to determine how much individual items should count for, if you are unsure it is best to refer to the moving company for guidance.
Binding
This estimate is counter to the above type of estimate. In a binding estimate you are required to pay the agreed upon amount, regardless of the actual amount of items. If you have more or fewer items the cost remains the same. Sometimes this can work in your favor. This type of estimate is great for planning a moving budget.
Binding Not-To-Exceed
This estimate is a hybrid of the above, your final cost may decrease if you have fewer items than estimated but your final cost may never go up. This type of estimate is also great for those who are using a moving budget.
