6 Things Your Moving Company Wants You to Know

Hiring a moving company can be stressful but not as stressful as doing it yourself.Moving Company Tips

It’s no wonder most people eventually decide to ditch the DIY approach and hire professionals.

Moving day will go much smoother if you know what to expect from your professional movers. Hiring moving services aliso viejo you’ll be sure to have the best moving experts.

We have put together a list of things you will need to know for the big day.

1. Research Your Moving Company!

This is a very important step that is often over looked. You are trusting your entire life to the hands of strangers, so there is nothing wrong with going the extra mile and thoroughly researching the moving company you plan to hire.

Price isn’t the only thing you need to be concerned with. You should feel comfortable with the people you hire. Every company is going to try and make the best first impression possible, especially over the phone.

Perhaps you should take the extra time and meet them in person prior to hiring them. You want to find a company that will have your best interest at heart and take the time to do the job right.

2. Be Prepared Before They Show Up.

If you decide to pack your belongings your self you will want to make sure everything is ready to go out the door prior to them showing up. Plan your day out so it can go as smoothly as possible.

There are many things to consider prior to the move. Do you need to reserve your building’s elevator? Will the truck be parking on a busy street? If you live in an apartment complex make sure you know the rules. Are there specific hours for moving?

Do you have large or heavy items such as a washer, dryer, or a piano? These items might require extra help or special moving equipment. Let your movers know ahead of time so they can be prepared.

3. Label Everything.

It is essential for you stay organized during your move and your professional movers will thank you, and if you’re near Houston or Washington using professionals as movers houston could be really your best option for moving. Label your boxes by appropriate room. If  the box of items goes in the living room then label it as such.

Your movers won’t know specific names such as “Timmy’s Room”. Save everyone time and use generic terms or inform your movers prior to the move. Nothing is more frustrating than trying to figure out what box goes where.

4. What Items Are of Value?

Your movers have no way of knowing what’s valuable, especially if it’s already packed in a box.  They don’t know that the green vases cost you $1,500, or that your grandma’s ashes are in that gold trimmed box, or the retail value of your surround sound stereo system.

Let them know beforehand what items they should keep a careful eye on.
The best way to deal with damage is to avoid it.

5. Stay Out of the Way!

You might think you’re helping when you start grabbing boxes and taking them to the moving truck, but you’re not. The moving company you hire are professionals and they most likely have a proven system that works efficiently.

So stay out of the way and let them work. You are better off directing the movers to the right rooms or reassembling furniture in your new home.

Not only can an eager homeowner slow down efforts, but he or she can also be an insurance liability.

6. If You Are Able, Leave a Tip!

This is not just a standard for your waiter or waitress. The moving business is a service industry and it is totally appropriate to tip your movers. Just like it is standard to tip 18 – 20% at a restaurant or other service industry, the same goes for moving companies. Think about it, you tip your stylist and your server so why not your movers.

Leading With Accountability

There is no “right” way to lead, everyone has their own ideas and beliefs about leadership. There are however, certain traits that are undeniable traits of leaders. Accountability being one of them and breeding an accountable staff is critical to growing leaders. At Strong College Students everyone is in a leadership position. Everyone has tasks that they are accountable for and a breakdown in accountability can be devastating.

An accountable leader knows two things. One, they need a clear expectation set and two, they know any given task will require their full responsibility.

Clarity

Setting a clear goal states exactly what will get done and when it will be complete. Clarity is power, especially when leading, which is why accountable leaders need a deadline. In many settings, ambiguous terms get tossed around and managers don’t realize how certain words or phrases can be interpreted differently depending on the individual.

The “end of the week,” “best” or even “completed” can be interpreted very differently. Is the end of the week friday? Is it the best I can do today, with my current resources? Is complete just mean written up in my computer, or formatted properly and ready to be presented to investors? A small communication can lead to big time confusion and  most companies and especially startups can’t afford to be making such mistakes where anyone could be their demise. Set a clearly defined finish line so everyone is on the same page eliminating any confusion.

Taking Responsibility

When someone takes responsibility for a task, many other things happen simultaneously. You become empowered, you officially become the leader, your mindset even changes. You think more competitively as you now know it’s personal, you’re reputation is on the line and you want to impress!. Every time anyone takes responsibility for a task you are taking on an opportunity. An opportunity to show people what you can do, how you can lead, how competently you are at that specific task and so on. You stop looking outward for answers and start looking at what YOU can do to solve current problems. The empowerment that this leads to is when your natural leadership juices really start flowing.

From a managerial perspective you learn a lot about your workers when they are given full responsibility for a task. Can they handle it? How well did they handle it? You will find that some may need to take a slower approach and some may be ready to take on even more responsibility because they knocked that out of the park. Either way that is how leaders are crafted, through learning from experience gained by completing tasks in real time.

Living Through Accountability

At Strong College Students we empower all of our staff to lead each day. The crew is in complete control of satisfying a customer’s needs that day as well as being responsible for all of their equipment, inventory, even down to the truck they drive. They have full responsibility and know the common goal, to graduate our customers to an enjoyable, memorable and fun moving experience!

Accountability is contagious. Once one person starts taking responsibility everyone starts following, the effect is quickly compounded. Everyone is accountable for something at their job whether you are conscious of it or not. If you want to see changes around your workplace or in your life start setting clear deadlines for yourself and take responsibility. Then make sure you let people know about it! When you let others know this gives you added strength. Others will stand behind you and will hold you accountable when you get weak or tired. They will pull you through when times get tough.

An accountable worker sets an example and is a leader no matter what. People are drawn to the courage and will begin to look to you to solve problems. This is how leaders are bred. You want to lead or make a difference? Hold yourself accountable and set an example. As an example is set and the rest of your staff sees the expectation a standard is understood and a culture is born.

Get references from friends, family or co-workers. You will not want to deal with claims and broken items when you’re dealing with the stress of settling in. Oh and budget movers may NOT process your moving claims with ease or even at all…

2 – Invest in real moving boxes, Strong College Students has an assortment of  low cost moving boxes for upcoming move.   Anne expressed that “liquor store boxes are great for glasses and vases, but the big boxes actually take less time to pack and unpack. They’re fabulous for linens, pillows, clothes and bulky items. Wardrobe boxes are fabulous. They will make your life so much easier”.  To make things easier our moving company provides FREE wardrobe boxes on your moving day this is helpful because as Anne explains “You can pack all the closets up immediately and have easy access to your clothes before AND after your move.” Anne also states that you should “Get the movers picture boxes and separate your pictures with cardboard. The frames will rub against each other during the move and get scratched up if you don’t. Use big boxes for your lampshades, too. You don’t want them to be dented and crushed. If you want to save money, check Craig’s List – lots of folks give the boxes away after they’ve moved”.

3 – Pack your boxes according to room. Put all your master bedroom stuff together, all the kitchen stuff together, all the bathroom stuff – ok you get the picture.

Moving companies

I have experienced the worst of the worst when it comes to moving companies, as well as some of the best. Having my high dollar electronics thrown around like inexpensive toys were not what I had in mind when moving them to my new home. I have even had to help the movers as they were unable to lift one of my dressers from my basement, which ended up causing me to pull a muscle in my back that has plagued me for years. This is when finding a company with passionate movers is worth the cost.

I did get lucky when moving into my current residence as I hired Strong College Students they promised highly motivated movers that cared as much as I do. These guys were strong, kind, and passionate movers that were there to provide a service better than anyone else. The team was on time, friendly, and upbeat as they greeted me with a smile on their face. I was instantly reassured that my packing and moving goals were their first priority, and they weren’t kidding. The difference was night and day. These workers cared about their appearance, worked well as a team, and recognized the importance of the job at hand.

It’s difficult to put your trust in someone who doesn’t have the appearance of professionalism. It’s even more difficult to justify paying the cost to move my most expensive items not knowing if they are going to make it safely to their final destination. Finding a company that curbs your anxiety can seem impossible if you have had a bad experience with movers, but they do exist, and it’s a huge relief when you can safely put your trust in their services.

Finding the right moving company

Making the decision to move can be extremely stressful. The thought of having to move all your heavy furniture, expensive electronics, and other important items from your residence can seem like a daunting task. Hiring a moving company that cared for my belongings as much as I did was an important decision that made the process a million times simpler.

Having moved so many times over the past 5 years, I have gone through my fair share of “experienced home movers.” Unfortunately, hiring the wrong type of company can cause more harm than good. The last thing you want is to hire a company who doesn’t value your possessions. Hiring a reputable company that will treat your possessions and home with respect will pay for itself ten times over.

Moving Tips for Hiring a Moving Company

So you finally decided to pull the trigger and relocate to a new city, one that offers everything you could ever ask for: good homes, great jobs, lots of culture, and tons of awesome entertainment options. There are many moving companies in the Tampa Bay Area. Many of them are unlicensed and do not have the proper moving insurance or credentials to handle your belongings. As a service to our industry and to help prevent you from having an unpleasant moving experience we created these moving tips.
Make sure that the driver and relocation crew sent by the moving company has good instructions before you leave them with your belongings and/or they leave you. We want to make sure we get your belongings to your new destination quickly and in an efficient manner.
There are so many fraudulent/scammers in the moving industry that it can be difficult to make sure you pick a reputable company but definitely before hiring them make sure they have all the needed documentation and permits to be able to legally operate as a moving company (two guys and a truck can get you in trouble if you aren’t careful).
Another great idea is to have a backup plan in the event that the mover blows you off or no-shows the move. Strong College Students is a reputable company and has never no showed for any client in our history of operations. But we have been called out to help move clients who booked other fly by night moving companies
Always, always, always check the insurance that the mover carries. You want to be certain that they can and will cover anything that is broken in the move and/or you already decided that you just don’t care.
